Edmund and his three siblings are sent to Professor Kirke's house in the country because of the air raids of World War II. Edmund is the second Pevensie to step through the wardrobe into Narnia, where he meets the White Witch. Using enchanted Turkish Delight as well as the promise of becoming King, the Witch tricks Edmund into betraying his siblings. Edmund begins to have a change of heart after witnessing how cruelly the Witch treats both him and other Narnians. Though Edmund is rescued from the Witch by Aslan's followers, the Witch tries to reclaim him by citing the Deep Magic, which states that every traitor belongs to her. Aslan offers to give His own life in exchange, the Witch agrees, and Edmund's life is spared. Edmund becomes one of the heroes of the first Battle of Beruna when he confronts the White Witch. She had been using her magic wand to turn the Narnians to stone, and instead of going directly for her as the rest of the Narnians were doing, Edmund breaks the Witch's wand. The breaking of her wand is a turning point for the Narnians in the battle. Edmund is wounded in his fight with the Witch, and after the battle Lucy heals him with her gift from Father Christmas, the healing cordial. There on the field, Aslan makes Edmund a knight. In the years that he reigns in Narnia with his brother and sisters, he is known as King Edmund the Just.

The sounding of Queen Susan's enchanted horn pulls Edmund and his siblings from the platform of an English railway station into Narnia. Once there, they use Edmund’s torch to explore the ancient treasure chamber beneath the ruins of Cair Paravel. The next day, Edmund challenges Trumpkin to a duel to prove that he is indeed King Edmund the Just from the Golden Age. Edmund wins his duel with the Dwarf and they set off to join Caspian, the rightful king of Narnia, whose throne has been usurped by his uncle Miraz. While traveling to Aslan's How where the Narnian army is camped, Edmund is the first to believe Lucy when she claims to see Aslan leading the group in a different direction. He remembers how he did not believe her before about the world she said she had found in the wardrobe, and concludes that she is telling the truth now. Soon he is also able to see the Great Lion who is leading them. When they arrive at Aslan's How, Edmund, Peter, and Trumpkin help to rid the council of the Wer-Wolf and the Hag that Nikabrik the Black Dwarf has brought in. Edmund and two others are chosen to deliver Peter's challenge of single combat to Miraz, and he fights valiantly in the second Battle of Beruna.

Edmund and Lucy are staying with their cousin Eustace for the summer holidays. While looking at a painting of a ship at sea, the three children are astonished as it suddenly becomes real and pulls them into the scene. After they are rescued from the sea by King Caspian, they join the crew on the Dawn Treader to assist with the quest to find the seven lost lords. Edmund is among those captured by the slavers on the Lone Islands, but freed again when Caspian and Lord Bern rescue them. When Eustace tells Edmund his story of how he became "un-dragoned," Edmund says that he believes it was Aslan he had seen. Edmund remembers his first adventure in Narnia and how the Lion changed him, and is able to understand Eustace's experience as few others can. Though Edmund had been impatient with Eustace earlier in the voyage, his attitude toward his cousin changes as Eustace learns to become less selfish. As the voyage continues, Edmund discovers that the water on Deathwater Island turns objects into gold. When the children reach the end of their voyage, Aslan tells Edmund and Lucy that they will not be coming back to Narnia, and that they must learn to know Him in their own world.

-
Edmund is one of the most dynamic characters in the series, as he undergoes a change from spiteful and selfish to repentant and just. Not wanting to admit that Lucy had been right, Edmund lies and says that he and Lucy had only been pretending that they visited Narnia. Because of his betrayal, Edmund is not present when the Pevensies meet Father Christmas, and so he does not receive any gifts. But when he is rescued from the White Witch by Aslan's followers, Edmund repents of his treachery and is eventually knighted by Aslan. Because of his experience, Edmund is able to relate to Eustace's conversion in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. "Between ourselves," Edmund tells him, "you haven’t been as bad as I was on my first trip to Narnia. You were only an ass, but I was a traitor."
