==Appearances== ===~ The Voyage of the Dawn Treader ~ (1952)=== [[File:3778.jpg|left]]In the company of the other six lords whom Miraz sent exploring, Lord Bern sails to the Lone Islands, where he falls in love and gets married. Bern continues to live and farm on the islands with his wife and daughters. He works meanwhile to convince Govenor Gumpas to abolish the slave trade, but to no avail. One day he is walking the island and he encounters the slaver Pug who has just captured a small party. Bern takes a particular interest in one young man and buys him from Pug. As Bern leads the man away, he tells him that he bought him because of his face; he reminded Bern of someone. At that point the man tells Bern that he is Caspian the Tenth of Narnia and that he can venture within six guesses who Bern is, for Caspian has come looking for him. Bern is immediately convinced of Caspian's identity, and he and Caspian make plans to free Caspian's friends from Pug. The following day, Bern, Caspian, and Drinian ride through the streets of Narrowhaven to confront Gumpas. When Gumpas refuses to cooperate, Caspian relieves him of his position and makes Bern the new Duke of the Lone Islands. As his first official act, Bern abolishes the slave trade. They then ride to the marketplace to declare every slave there free and rescue Caspian's friends. Bern remains on the Lone Islands as Duke and oversees the Islands' renewed ties with Narnia and the aftermath of the abolished slave trade. ==About== Bern is a man of integrity who does everything in his power to stop the injustice of the slave trade on the Lone Islands. Though his efforts are futile until Caspian arrives, Bern still makes his convictions clear and is not afraid of either Pug or Gumpas. He has made a good life for himself on the Islands, but Bern has some regrets that he did not sail on with the other six lords. Bern is an intelligent planner; he knows the character of Gumpas and it is his idea to work by a show of more force than Caspian actually has. Bern's friends are ready at his call when Caspian rides into Narrowhaven. Later Bern looks ahead and foresees war with Calormen over the end of the slave trade — but as this war never materializes, we can assume that Bern's adroit leadership helps to avert it. It is evident that Bern is a good leader and will serve Caspian and Narnia faithfully in his new post as Duke of the Lone Islands. ==Quotes== *"You needn't be afraid of me, boy. I'll treat you well. I bought you for your face. You reminded me of someone." (VDT, Ch. 3) *"Uncover before Narnia, you dog." (VDT, Ch. 4) *"I've often been up here of a morning, and seen the sun come up out of the sea, and sometimes it looked as if it were only a couple of miles away. And I've wondered about my friends and wondered what there really is behind that horizon. Nothing, most likely, yet I am always half ashamed that I stayed behind." (VDT, Ch. 4) ==Bio Info== '''Titles:''' Lord Bern, Duke of the Lone Islands '''Age:''' Old enough to have grown daughters — most likely the same age as Caspian the Ninth '''Species:''' Son of Adam, Telmarine '''Home:''' Avra, the Lone Islands '''Physical Description:''' A fine-looking bearded man '''First Appearance:''' ''The Voyage of the Dawn Treader'', Ch. 3 (1952) '''Portrayals:''' *Michael Haughey: Focus on the Family Radio Theater, 1999 – 2002 *Pavel Douglas: BBC TV series, 1989 – 1990 *John Turner: BBC Radio Tales of Narnia
