Eustace Clarence Scrubb

[[File:3778.jpg|left]]Eustace is busy annoying his two cousins, Lucy and Edmund, when a painting of a ship at sea comes to life and pulls them into the scene. Eustace finds himself on board the Dawn Treader with Caspian and the rest of the crew. He is mortified to learn that he cannot return to England and must join the quest to find the lost Telmarine Lords. In the beginning of the journey Eustace keeps a diary about all his misfortunes. He constantly complains of how he is "mistreated"; at one point he comes upon the unsuspecting Reepicheep and swings him around by the tail, until Reepicheep jabs him with his sword and Eustace is forced to apologize to avoid a duel. Eustace is one of the group that is captured by the slaver Pug on the Lone Islands, but later rescued by Caspian (though Eustace could not be sold because he was so sulky). Eustace’s fortunes change, however, on Dragon Island when he wanders off alone, discovers a hoard of dragon treasure, and falls asleep on it. When he awakens, he has been transformed into a dragon. It is then that Eustace realizes what an annoyance he has been to everyone. He wants to make up for his behavior and be friends with the others now. After the crew learns the dragon is actually Eustace, they try to comfort him and assure him of their friendship. But when Eustace overhears them trying to figure out how to bring him along on their voyage, he falls into lonely despair. It is not until an encounter with Aslan that his dragon skin is removed and he is transformed into a boy again. Eustace sails with the crew through their many adventures on Deathwater Island, the Island of the Dufflepuds, the Island where Dreams Come True, Ramandu’s Island, and beyond. When the Dawn Treader reaches the end of the world, Eustace, Edmund, Lucy, and Reepicheep continue on while the rest of the crew returns to Narnia. Eustace witnesses Reepicheep's departure for Aslan's Country and afterwards meets Aslan Himself, who sends the children back home.

[[File:3787.jpg|left]]Eustace discovers Jill crying behind the school gym. To comfort her, he tells her of his adventures in Narnia and they decide to try to escape there. But while they are calling on Aslan, they are discovered by the school bullies. Eustace and Jill open a door and are stunned to find that it leads into another world. They enter that world and come to the edge of a cliff, but when Eustace tries to pull Jill back, he slips and falls. Just then, Aslan appears and blows Eustace to the safety of Narnia. When Eustace lands, he notices an elderly king getting ready to set sail. Jill arrives moments later, saying that Aslan has told her there is someone here Eustace knows and must speak to immediately. Eustace insists he does not recognize anyone until Glimfeather the Owl mentions that it is King Caspian who has set sail to seek Aslan. Eustace realizes he does indeed know the old king, but it is too late. Jill then explains to Eustace that Aslan has sent them to find and rescue Caspian's long-lost son, Rilian. That night, the Owls take the children to the Marsh-wiggle Puddleglum, and the three of them set out in search of the lost Prince. Along the way, they meet the Lady of the Green Kirtle who tempts them with the comforts of Harfang, home of the Gentle Giants. After discovering that the Giants plan to eat them at their feast, Eustace, Jill, and Puddleglum escape Harfang by crawling into a cave. But while they are hiding, the stones give way beneath them and they fall deep below the surface. They are then captured by the Warden of the Underworld who takes them to Underland's Queen (the Lady of the Green Kirtle). Upon arriving at the underground city, they meet a strange prince under enchantment, who turns out to be none other than Prince Rilian. Eustace helps free Rilian and kill the green Lady in her serpent form. After escaping the Underworld, they return to Narnia in time to reunite Rilian with his father Caspian and witness the death of the old king. Aslan brings Eustace and Jill back to His country where He tells Eustace to pluck a thorn and drive it into His paw to draw blood, thereby bringing Caspian back to life. Eustace, Jill, Caspian, and Aslan then return to England where no time has passed. They terrify the bullies (which leads to public investigation and reform of the school), and Eustace and Jill return home.  

[[File:3774.jpg|left]]Eustace is present when King Tirian suddenly appears to the friends of Narnia, alerting them to the fact that Narnia is in danger. Since Aslan has told the Pevensies that they may not return to Narnia, it is decided that Eustace and Jill will go, using the magic rings. They take a train to the meeting place to get the rings from Peter and Edmund, when suddenly there comes a “frightful jerk”... and Eustace and Jill find themselves in Narnia. Eustace accompanies Tirian and Jill as they rescue Jewel and Puzzle from the stable. Eustace fights by Tirian's side in the last battle of Narnia, and is thrown through the stable door. Eustace witnesses night falling on Narnia and goes "further up and further in" with the others as Aslan leads them to His country.
