Maugrim

Maugrim is the chief of the [[White Witch|Witch]]’s secret police. This is a position of some responsibility, as the [[White Witch|Witch]] expects him to fulfill her orders ruthlessly and efficiently. His decision to track the children after finding the Beavers' dam empty was most likely spurred by desperation at the thought of the Witch's anger at his failure. Maugrim is an interesting character because he has betrayed his fellow Narnians by serving the Witch. It would seem that his conscience is entirely dead, as he feels no remorse for his plans of killing the Pevensies and the Beavers and later attacks Susan and Lucy at the Narnian camp. His death at Peter's hand demonstrates the young king coming into his kingdom and striking down the servants of his enemy.

When the Witch learns that Tumnus helped Lucy escape instead of handing her over to the Witch, she orders Maugrim to arrest Tumnus and bring him to her. The Pevensies find the note left by Maugrim in Tumnus' cave and decide to try to rescue the Faun. Later when Edmund comes to the Witch's castle, he first thinks Maugrim is a stone wolf like the statues in the courtyard. But Maugrim surprises him by being alive and makes him wait outside while the wolf informs the Witch of his arrival. Maugrim returns shortly to invite Edmund inside. When the Witch learns that the other three Pevensies are with the Beavers, she sends Maugrim to the Beavers' Dam to kill anyone he finds there. When Maugrim reaches the dam he finds it empty, so he and another wolf track the children to the Stone Table. There Maugrim tries to attack Susan and Lucy, but Peter comes to their rescue. Aslan instructs the other Narnians nearby to let Peter fight Maugrim alone. After a brief struggle, Maugrim dies upon Peter's sword.
