[[File:3778.jpg|left]]Rhince meets Edmund, Lucy, and Eustace after they arrive on the Dawn Treader. Rhince is the first mate and spends much of the voyage on the poop deck steering or captaining the ship when Drinian is ashore. Rhince does not get along with Eustace at all. When Eustace disappears on Dragon Island, Rhince expresses his strong dislike of Eustace, and is immediately rebuked by Reepicheep. Once the crew reaches Ramandu's Island, Rhince and Drinian are responsible for choosing which men will sail on to the end of the world and which men will remain behind. Rhince sails on with the rest of the crew and helps to break the spell that holds the lords in an enchanted sleep on Ramandu's Island.

Rhince is a loyal sailor on the Dawn Treader. He is a skilled seaman who knows his work, and as first mate, Rhince is trusted with the ship on many occasions while Drinian goes ashore with Caspian and the others. Rhince appears to come from a lower class than Drinian. Because of his common origins and uneducated speech, Rhince seems to represent the crew among the higher-born company. But he does not take part in the sailors' near-mutiny on Ramandu's Island, and though his manner is not always refined, his loyalty is never questioned.
