Prince Rilian, his mother, and several other Narnians go out for a picnic one spring afternoon. After a time the Queen grows tired and decides to rest a short distance away from the group. Suddenly Rilian hears her cry out and when he rushes to her side he sees a green serpent gliding away in the grass. The Queen has been bitten by that snake and dies from its poison. Rilian, wild with grief, vows to avenge his mother's death and rides out every day looking for the worm to slay it. One day, after his father's friend Drinian has seen the green Lady with Rilian, the Prince rides out once again but does not return to the castle that night. He is not seen again for over ten years until Jill, Eustace, and Puddleglum meet him with the Lady of the Green Kirtle. At this meeting he is wearing a full suit of armor and they do not recognize him. When the three travelers are brought to see the Queen of the Underland, Rilian insists on speaking with them. As they talk, Rilian reveals that the Earthmen are digging to the surface and he is to ride out, slay the ruler of the land above, and proclaim himself king. He will also take the green Lady (whom he refers to as his savior) as his wife and queen. After dinner he tells them that “his hour” is near and the Earthmen will come to bind him to the Silver Chair. Whatever happens, he warns them, they must not set him free. However, while bound to the chair, Rilian in his ravings cries out to them to free him in the name of Aslan. This fulfills the fourth Sign, and at great risk, they release Rilian from the chair and the enchantment is broken. Rilian destroys the chair and they make plans to escape, but are discovered by the Queen of the Underland. Her attempt to re-enchant them is unsuccessful, and in her fury she transforms into the same serpent that killed Rilian's mother. Rilian and the others slay the serpent and return to Narnia. Rilian arrives in time to see his father Caspian just before the old king dies.
