As a young Calormene soldier and loyal servant of Tash, Emeth is delighted when he is chosen to take part in a new attack on Narnia. But that delight soon sours when he learns they are entering Narnia in disguise rather than as soldiers. He finds even more insulting the tale that that his commander Rishda Tarkaan and Shift the Ape are spinning, that Aslan and Tash are one — "Tashlan." When Emeth has the opportunity to come face to face with "Tashlan," he takes it, presenting himself to Rishda and asking to go into the Stable to face his god. Rishda initially refuses, knowing that it is only a trick, but Emeth's argument is so strong that Rishda finally agrees. When Emeth enters, he finds not Tash but a soldier lying in wait to kill any comer. Emeth kills the soldier and throws him out of the Stable. He then finds that he is in a completely new world, and wanders the countryside until he meets Aslan. Because Emeth has always believed that Tash was the true god and Aslan was a demon, he believes that Aslan will kill him. But Aslan tells him that because the service Emeth offered to Tash was good, he was really serving Aslan because Tash cannot accept good deeds. Aslan then leaves Emeth to think this over. Several hours later, Emeth is found by Tirian, the friends of Narnia, and several Narnian dogs who are on their way to find Aslan. Emeth explains his story to the party and then journeys further up and further in with them to Aslan's country.

About Emeth
Emeth is one of the most controversial characters in the Chronicles of Narnia. Though he is a relatively minor player in only one book, The Last Battle, Emeth has an encounter with Aslan that has profound theological implications. Emeth is a faithful servant of the Calormene god Tash and has hated Aslan all his life, reviling the Lion as a demon. But when Emeth enters the Stable, Aslan permits the young Calormene to enter his country, saying, "Not because he [Tash] and I are one, but because we are opposites, I take to me the services which thou hast done to him. For I and he are of such different kinds that no service which is vile can be done to me, and none which is not vile can be done to him... unless thy desire had been for me thou wouldst not have sought so long and so truly. For all find what they truly seek." Readers have been wrestling with the spiritual dilemma posed by Emeth's story ever since, and he remains one of Lewis' most memorable characters.

Inspiration
In Lewis' The Abolition of Man, he writes that the word "ěmeth" in ancient Hebrew means "truth," with alternate renderings of "faithfulness" and "permanence." Lewis says, "Emeth is that which does not deceive, does not 'give,' does not change, that which holds water."

Quotes
"Thou hast said that their Aslan and our Tash are all one. And if that is the truth, then Tash himself is in yonder. And how then sayest thou that I have nothing to do with him? For gladly would I die a thousand deaths if I might look once on the face of Tash." (LB, Ch. 10)
~ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe ~ (1950)
The Witch's Dwarf is driving the White Witch's sleigh through Narnia one day when they come across Edmund. When the Witch conjures a hot drink and Turkish Delight for Edmund, the Dwarf hands it to Edmund with a wicked grin. Later when Edmund betrays his siblings and returns to the Witch, the Dwarf harnesses the sleigh without bells at the Witch's command and they set off to find the other Pevensies. Along the way the thaw begins and the Dwarf claims it is Aslan's doing. When the melting snow forces them to walk, the Dwarf binds Edmund's hands and forces him to walk quickly by cracking his whip. When they learn that the three Pevensies have joined Aslan, the Dwarf suggests that they kill Edmund immediately to prevent the prophecy from being fullfilled. The Witch agrees, but before they kill him, Edmund is rescued by the Narnians. The Witch turns herself into a tree stump and the Dwarf into a boulder to escape. Later the Witch sends the Dwarf before Aslan to demand a meeting, and Aslan tells the Dwarf that he will meet with the Dwarf's mistress on condition that she leave her wand behind. The Dwarf is most likely among the evil creatures of Narnia who witness the Witch killing Aslan at the Stone Table. It also highly likely that the Dwarf fights in the battle against the Narnians, but his final fate is unknown.

About the Witch's Dwarf
The Witch's Dwarf is a traitor to his people in his service to the White Witch. Though he is the Witch's servant, he does not hesitate to state unpleasant truths to her (such as Aslan bringing the thaw) or mention his own ideas about what they should do (as when he suggests they kill Edmund out of hand to prevent the prophecy from coming true). The Dwarf is not a comic character in the book; rather, his role is sinister and chilling to Edmund as the Dwarf carries out the Witch's bidding. It is clear from his suggestion of killing Edmund that the Dwarf is just as ruthless as his mistress.
Titles: Princess of Charn, The White Witch, The White Lady, as well as her self-appointed titles: Empress Jadis, Imperial Majesty Jadis, Queen of Narnia, Chatelaine of Cair Paravel, Empress of the Lone Islands

Age: Unknown. She dwelt in Narnia for a thousand years before the hundred-year winter began. It is unknown how long she lived in Charn before that. It is only certain is that she was over 1,100 years old when she died.

Species: The White Witch’s origin is a topic of some debate, as there are two descriptions for it given in the Chronicles. In LWW (1950), Mr. Beaver tells the Pevensies that she is half-Jinn and half-giantess, and that there is not a drop of real human blood in her. In MN (1955), Jadis is depicted as the last of the humanoid race of Charn, though not a Daughter of Eve. The apparent discrepancy can be reconciled by the idea that Mr. Beaver's story is a Narnian old wives' tale. But it is also possible that Lewis made an error or simply changed his mind. Since Lewis said he did not plan out the series in advance, the most plausible explanation seems to be that Lewis intended Mr. Beaver’s words to be true when he wrote them, but later decided to change Jadis' origin to the royal family of Charn. Whatever her origin, it is clear that Jadis is not a Daughter of Eve, and therefore cannot be the rightful ruler of Narnia.

Home: Charn; Her castle (northeast of Lantern Waste), Narnia

Physical Description: Beautiful, with a red mouth, and skin as white as snow (in LWW) and taller than people in our world. In MN, Digory said that he had never in all his life seen a woman so beautiful — but Polly always said she could never see anything especially beautiful about her.

Tools: Golden wand, stone knife
Jadis is in an enchanted sleep in Charn until Digory strikes the bell and awakens her. She grabs hold of Polly's hair as the children touch their rings to return to our world, and soon finds herself in London with a very startled Uncle Andrew. She orders him to lead her to where she can find slaves, and causes quite an uproar in London. In the midst of the chaos, Digory manages to pull her out of our world using his magic ring. But instead of landing in Charn, they accidentally go to an empty world. Jadis despairs at the emptiness, but then Aslan's song begins, and they all witness the creation of Narnia. Hating the song the Lion is singing, Jadis throws an iron bar she had broken off a lamppost in London at Aslan, but it falls harmlessly to the ground (and grows into a lamppost). Seeing this, she shrieks and runs away. Digory does not see her again until he goes to the garden to find an apple at Aslan's command. There, Digory sees that Jadis has eaten the forbidden fruit, and her face has turned deadly white. She tries to tempt Digory to keep the fruit to cure his sick mother, but he refuses and brings it back to Narnia as he was bidden by Aslan.

~ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe ~ (1950)
The White Witch is riding through Narnia on her sledge when she comes upon a Son of Adam, Edmund, standing in the snow. Fearing the prophecies that predict her overthrow, she uses enchanted Turkish Delight to persuade Edmund to bring his brother and two sisters to her. From Edmund, she learns of Tumnus' involvement and has him arrested, eventually turning him stone. When Edmund returns to the Witch with the news that "Aslan is on the move," she immediately sledges down to the Stone Table, hoping to cut off the other three Pevensies. But along the way, Aslan ends her hundred-year winter and she is unable to travel quickly in the thaw. She has just made the decision to kill Edmund when Narnians (sent by Aslan) arrive in time to rescue him. She escapes by turning herself and her Dwarf into a boulder and a tree-stump. Although Edmund escapes that night, the Witch comes to the Narnian camp and tries to claim him by citing the Deep Magic, which states that all traitors belong to her. In private negotiations Aslan offers His own life in exchange for Edmund's. The Witch agrees, and she kills Him on the Stone Table that very night. After He is dead, she wastes no time in attacking the Narnian army. During the battle, she uses her wand to turn the Narnians to stone and severely wounds Edmund when he breaks it. The Witch is stunned when Aslan appears, leading another army (the stone statues from her castle that He had brought back to life). With a roar that shakes all Narnia, Aslan flings Himself at the White Witch and kills her.

About The White Witch
Jadis, the White Witch, is an iconic villain in the Chronicles. Her origin was largely unknown the publication of The Magician's Nephew, in which Lewis explores her history more fully. Jadis' cruelty and selfishness are shown in the deathly cold winter that she forces upon Narnia. She rules the land by fear, using spies and secret police to enforce her will. She has no regard for the lives of others, as demonstrated by her use of Deplorable Word in Charn while battling her sister for the throne. Jadis is also quite physically strong, as she keeps her seat upon a rearing Strawberry in London and wrenches a lamppost from its setting. As a witch, Jadis possesses the ability to make things appear differently than they are, and uses enchantments that work on the victim's weaknesses. Lewis describes her (and witches in general) as terribly practical, saying, "They are not interested in things or people unless they can use them."

Inspiration
Jadis' ability to turn people to stone may have been inspired by the myth of the Greek gorgon Medusa, who was able to turn people to stone if they looked directly at her. Jadis is also similar in some ways to the character of Circe in The Odyssey; Circe uses magical food to tempt humans, just as Jadis uses Turkish Delight to tempt Edmund.
Douglas Gresham writes, "Jadis is the embodiment of all evil. She's the most beautiful woman you'll ever see in your life. The devil dresses up his temptations in beauty, so Jadis also represents that side of Satan's favorite temptations. I think her character is probably an amalgam of various women who passed through Jack's life. There are bits of various people in her."

Quotes
*"Who has awaked me? Who has broken the spell?" (MN, Ch. 5)
*"You must learn, child, that what would be wrong for you or for any of the common people is not wrong in a great Queen such as I. The weight of the world is on our shoulders. We must be freed from all rules. Ours is a high and lonely destiny." (MN, Ch. 5)
*"I see we are in a large city. Procure for me at once a chariot or a flying carpet or a well-trained dragon, or whatever is usual for royal and noble persons in your land." (MN, Ch. 6)
*"Dog, unhand our royal charger. We are the Empress Jadis." (MN, Ch. 7)
*"Not know the Queen of Narnia? Ha! You shall know us better hereafter." (LWW, Ch. 3)
*"I see you are an idiot, whatever else you may be. Answer me, once and for all, or I shall lose my patience. Are you human?" (LWW, Ch. 4)
*"If either of you mention that name again, he shall instantly be killed." (LWW, Ch. 11)

First Appearance: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Ch. 3 (1950)

*"You know that every traitor belongs to me as my lawful prey and that for every treachery I have a right to a kill... And so, that human creature is mine. His life is forfeit to me. His blood is my property." (LWW, Ch. 13)
During one battle the Giant Wimbleweather breaks out at the wrong place at the wrong time, causing more damage to his own side than to the enemy. He feels terrible for costing the Old Narnians the battle, and that night in the camp his giant tears splash onto the Talking Mice who had just gotten warm and drowsy. He hurries away from their shrill, angry voices and accidentally steps on somebody's tail, and somebody bites him. All in all, he is quite miserable until he is asked to be one of the Marshals for the duel between Peter and Miraz. He fights during the Battle of Beruna, and, we assume, lives happily ever after.

About Wimbleweather
Wimbleweather is like most giants — eager to help, but not always very helpful. He is honest, humble, and eager to please. He wants to fight for the Old Narnian cause, but his mistakes in following directions often cost the battle. He suffers from guilt over this and simply wants to help in any way he can. When Peter takes pity on him and asks him to be a Marshal for the duel, Wimbleweather is delighted to be of service. Wimbleweather always tries to help those smaller than himself (though the dwarfs to whom he offers a ride wish that they had walked instead!).
Title: Mr. Tumnus the Faun

Age: Unknown. Some would argue that Tumnus must be over 100 years old because of the stories he tells Lucy about Narnia before the Hundred-Year Winter. But others have pointed out that Tumnus simply tells these stories and never says he himself was there. It seems like a reasonable assumption that Tumnus is over 100 years old, but the book simply isn't clear, so we don't know for sure.

Home: A small, dry, clean cave of reddish stone located a little to the east of Lantern Waste in Narnia
Physical Description: From the waist upwards, he is very much like a man. He has curly hair, a short pointed beard, and a "strange but pleasant" little face. His legs are shaped like a goat's with glossy black hair and hoofs instead of feet. He also has a tail, two horns (one on each side of his forehead), and rather reddish skin. He is a little taller than Lucy.
After asking some questions, he learns that the girl's name is Lucy, and that she is apparently from "the far land of Spare Oom." As one of the White Witch's paid informers, Tumnus invites Lucy to his cave for tea, where he intends to lull her to sleep and then hand her over to the Witch. But after getting to know Lucy, Tumnus finds that he cannot go through with it. He takes her back secretly to the lamppost and helps her escape back to her world. When Lucy enters Narnia the second time, Tumnus tells her that he does not think the Witch has found out about their meeting. But after she learns everything from Edmund, the Witch sends her secret police led by the Wolf Maugrim to arrest Tumnus and destroy his home. The Witch turns the Faun into stone and he remains in her house until Aslan comes to the Witch's castle to breathe on the statues and restore them to life. At their coronation, the Pevensies shower Tumnus with honors and gifts for his service to Narnia. Years later, in the Golden Age of Narnia, Tumnus brings the news to the Pevensies that the White Stag has been sighted.
When Tumnus walks into the Narnians' lodging in Tashbaan, Shasta (mistaken for Corin) is startled because he has never seen a Faun before. As they discuss Edmund's concerns about Rabadash, Tumnus tells them of a conversation he had with the Grand Vizier in which it was strongly hinted that the Prince has intentions to marry Susan regardless of her answer to his proposal. The Narnians are unsure of how they can safely escape Tashbaan until Tumnus suddenly has an idea. He suggests that they invite Rabadash to a banquet aboard the Narnians' ship, the Splendour Hyaline, so that they can go to their ship without arousing suspicion. Susan sees the brilliance of this plan and says, "Oh Master Tumnus, dear Master Tumnus, you have saved us all." After the plan is agreed upon, Tumnus gives Shasta food and tells him to rest (thinking he was Corin). The company safely escapes Calormen the following evening.

About Tumnus
Even though he only has a few scenes, Mr. Tumnus the Faun is one of the most memorable and iconic characters in the Chronicles. He is the first fantasy creature to be introduced in the seven books, and also the first character to say the word "Narnia." The stories that Tumnus tells Lucy help to fill in the blanks somewhat between where The Magician's Nephew ends and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe begins. One of the things he mentions is that before the hundred-year winter began, Bacchus and Silenus used to visit Narnia, and of course they appear later in Prince Caspian when Narnia is liberated again.

Inspiration
C. S. Lewis' inspiration for the Chronicles of Narnia came from an image he had had in his head since he was 16. It was a faun carrying an umbrella and parcels in snowy wood. "From that simple, but unusual image," Douglas Gresham said, "came the classic story called The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Perhaps this is the reason Tumnus is one of the most well-described characters in the series.

Quotes
*"Excuse me—I don't want to be inquisitive—but should I be right in thinking that you are a Daughter of Eve?" (LWW, Ch. 2)
*"This is the land of Narnia, where we are now; all that lies between the lamp-post and the great castle of Cair Paravel on the eastern sea." (LWW, Ch. 2)
*"Daughter of Eve from the far land of Spare Oom where eternal summer reigns around the bright city of War Drobe, how would it be if you came and had tea with me?" (LWW, Ch. 2)
*"Would you believe that I'm the sort of Faun to meet a poor innocent child in the wood, one that had never done me any harm, and pretend to be friendly with it, and invite it home to my cave, all for the sake of lulling it asleep and then handing it over to the White Witch?" (LWW, Ch. 2)
*"Don't speak to me, don't speak to me. I'm thinking. I'm thinking so that I can hardly breathe." (HHB, Ch. 5)
*"The further up and the further in you go, the bigger everything gets. The inside is larger than the outside." (LB, Ch. 16)
"Mr. Tumnus was a very difficult character to find. He was basically a character that had to kidnap a little girl, and yet still be likeable. So whoever I cast for the character had to be very warm and likeable on the first meeting. I've often said he's somebody who has a double agenda. I kind of saw him almost like a German living in Nazi Germany discovering a Jewish child and knowing that the propaganda and the government was telling him to do one thing but his internal ethics and morals were telling him to do another thing. When James came to audition, he got the double agenda, it came through his performance and his reading. He had that warm presence that you knew would just come through on the screen."
Along the way, he risks a shortcut across open country and is captured by the Telmarines. He is taken to be drowned near Cair Paravel when the Pevensies rescue him. He tells them his story, and they realize that it was Susan's horn that has drawn them into Narnia. Trumpkin is a practical thinker. He does not initially believe the stories about Aslan and the four kings and queens. But out of loyalty to Caspian, his king, he volunteers to journey to the Stone Table and seek the help he does not believe will come. "I might as well die on a wild goose chase as die here," he says. Trumpkin has been told all his life that the woods surrounding Cair Paravel were "as full of ghosts as they were of trees." So he is quite relieved when he sees that it is the four Pevensies, flesh and blood, who have rescued him. It is his idea to make use of the fishing tackle in the boat, and the Pevensies are glad to be eating something beside apples. Trumpkin is evidently one of Caspian's most trusted friends, as Caspian leaves him as Lord Regent in his place both times the king sets sail on the Dawn Treader.
Quotes
*"Beards and bedsteads! So there really is a castle, after all?" (PC, Ch. 3)
*"Bulbs and bolsters! Nikabrik. Why need you talk so unhandsomely? It isn't the creature's fault that it bashed its head against a tree outside our hole." (PC, Ch. 5)
*"Now, once and for all, Nikabrik. Will you contain yourself, or must Trufflehunter and I sit on your head?" (PC, Ch. 5)
*"But why stop at Trees and Waters? Wouldn't it be even nicer if the stones started throwing themselves at old Miraz?" (PC, Ch. 6)
*"Thimbles and thunderstorms! Is that how you speak to the King?" (PC, Ch. 7)
*"You are my King. I know the difference between giving advice and taking orders. You've had my advice, and now it's the time for orders." (PC, Ch. 7)
*"And I said to myself, 'If that's not the Horn, call me a rabbit.'" (PC, Ch. 8)
*"Cobbles and kettledrums! I hope this madness isn't going to end in a moonlight climb and broken necks." (PC, Ch. 10)
*"Weights and water-bottles! It's me you're sitting on. Get off. You're like a young elephant." (PC, Ch. 12)
*"What's that? The girls are all killed! I don't believe a word of it. What girls? Who killed 'em? (SC, Ch. 3)
*"I tell you what it is, Master Glimfeather; when I was a young Dwarf there used to be talking beasts and birds in this country who really could talk. There wasn't all this mumbling and muttering and whispering." (SC, Ch. 3)
Susan, the second oldest of the four Pevensies, is sent away to Professor Kirke's house in the country with her siblings because of the air raids of World War II. Like her two brothers, Susan does not believe Lucy's story about finding a country in a wardrobe. Concerned that something might be wrong with Lucy, Susan and Peter ask Professor Kirke for advice. His response, that logically Lucy must be telling the truth, astounds them. But despite her initial disbelief, Susan also finds her way into Narnia when the children climb into the wardrobe to avoid Mrs. Macready's tour. When the Pevensies decide to visit Mr. Tumnus, Susan suggests that they use the fur coats that were in the wardobe, saying, "we shan't take them even out of the wardrobe." Later at the Beavers' house, when Susan hears Aslan's name for the first time, she feels as if some delicious smell or delightful strain of music had just floated past her. On the journey to the Stone Table they meet Father Christmas, who gives Susan a bow, a quiver of arrows, and a magic horn. Susan first uses the horn at the Stone Table when the Wolf Maugrim attacks the camp and chases her up a tree. That night, Susan and Lucy follow Aslan to the Stone Table where they witness His death. In the morning, the two girls are there to hear the Stone Table crack and see Aslan after His resurrection. During her reign, Susan becomes known as Queen Susan the Gentle.
During her visit, she realizes that she does not wish to marry Rabadash. After telling Edmund of her decision to reject the proposal, Susan says, "Yet when he was with us in Narnia, truly this Prince bore himself in another fashion than he does now in Tashbaan." Edmund believes that Rabadash will make her his wife by force, and they decide to flee. Edmund's foresight and Tumnus' brilliant plan enable the Narnians to escape.
Susan and her siblings are pulled into Narnia when Narnia's rightful king, Caspian, blows Susan's magic horn to call for aid. That night, she finds a chesspiece that the Pevensies remembered from their reign in Narnia. This leads them to the realization that they are in the ruins of Cair Paravel. After they rediscover the treasure chamber, Susan finds her bow and quiver of arrows but is surprised that her magic horn is missing. The next day, after Susan's arrow prevents two Telmarines from drowning Trumpkin, the Dwarf explains that Doctor Cornelius had found her magic horn and passed it on to Caspian. When Trumpkin finishes his story, Susan beats him in an archery competition to prove to him that she is indeed Queen Susan the Gentle from the ancient past. After crossing Glasswater, Susan doubts Lucy's claim that she has seen Aslan, and Susan and Trumpkin are the last to be able see Him. Aslan tells her, "You have listened to your fears, child. Come, let me breathe on you. Forget them." While Peter and Edmund go into Aslan's How to meet Caspian, Susan and Lucy stay with Aslan and take part in the "romp" with Bacchus and Silenus. The next morning, the girls ride on Aslan's back as the Bridge of Beruna is destroyed and Narnia is set right again. After the second Battle of Beruna, Aslan tells Susan and Peter that they will not be coming back to Narnia because they are too old.
About Susan
Susan is the practical older sister in the Pevensie family. When the children first step into Narnia through the wardrobe, they follow her sensible suggestion and use the fur coats. In Prince Caspian, she is among the last to believe Lucy's claim that she has seen Aslan. Susan's absence in The Last Battle makes her one of the most controversial characters in the series.
Sopespian has just finished eating with Glozelle when he looks up and sees Edmund, Glenstorm, and Wimbleweather coming toward them out of the woods. At first glance they believe it is an attack, but when they see the green branches the party is carrying, they realize it is a parley. Looking into Edmund's kingly face, Sopespian and Glozelle determine he has come not to surrender, but to bring a challenge. They are surprised by this because the Telmarine army is clearly in a superior position. But Glozelle believes that they can use this to their advantage and takes Sopespian aside to suggest that they might be able to get Miraz to accept the challenge. If Miraz wins, then the war would be over, but if he loses, the Telmarine army can still win the war — and Sopespian and Glozelle could then rule Narnia. When Miraz calls them into his tent to ask for advice on the challenge, the two lords cleverly imply that he should refuse it because he is too old and cowardly. This throws Miraz into a rage, goading him to accept the challenge, and he stomps out of the tent after insulting them. Sopespian and Glozelle are pleased with his response to their manipulation. During the duel, Miraz falls on his face, but before he can rise Sopespian and Glozelle rush into the ring, shouting "Treachery" against the Narnians and starting the Battle of Beruna. Sopespian dies when he faces King Peter in battle.

About Sopespian
Sopespian is an opportunistic Telmarine lord who is easily led into treacherous plans by his friend Glozelle. He is less charismatic and creative than Glozelle, but he plays his part in the deception of Miraz with understated finesse. He endures Miraz's insults with equanimity, knowing that he can only gain from what they have goaded Miraz to do. His selfish personality is less assertive than Glozelle's, but no less dangerous. His death in battle against King Peter is a fitting end to his plans of crushing the Narnian army after the duel.

Quotes
*"This is a fell warrior, I warrant you, wherever the rebels have got him from. He is (in your Lordship's private ear) a kinglier man than ever Miraz was." (PC, Ch. 13)
*"Do not touch it, Sire. And what your Majesty says of the policy of the thing comes in very happily. It gives your Majesty excellent grounds for a refusal without any cause for questioning your Majesty's honor or courage." (PC, Ch. 13)
Rynelf meets Edmund, Lucy, and Eustace when Caspian orders Rynelf to bring them some spiced wine after they are pulled from the ocean. Rynelf stays aboard the Dawn Treader during most of the adventures, but he experiences some himself when they sail to the Dark Island. When Rynelf is confronted with his living nightmares, he says he can hear "them crawling up the side of the ship." But when Aslan saves them, Rynelf is the first to see the tiny speck of light ahead, and he is also the first to laugh at himself for being a fool at the Dark Island. On Ramandu's Island, Rynelf gives a speech to the men who want to give up the voyage, telling them how much they would regret sailing this far but not continuing on to the end of the world. When they reach the end of the world and Caspian announces that he will not be returning to Narnia, but rather sailing on with Reepicheep, Rynelf is among those who stand up to Caspian to forbid him to do this. After Aslan appears to Caspian, they turn around and sail back to Narnia with Caspian still their king.

About Rynelf
Rynelf is a loyal sailor aboard the Dawn Treader and his job is to take soundings (measuring the depth of the ocean). He is respected by the crew and this allows him to step out and make a crucial speech when the sailors were wavering in their loyalty on Ramandu's Island. Rynelf demonstrates his loyalty as a friend and subject to Caspian when he opposes Caspian's selfish decision to sail on with Reepicheep to the end of the world. Though Caspian is his king, Rynelf is not afraid to stand up to Caspian when he sees the king making a poor decision. Rynelf is reliable, unselfish, and committed to the good of all those sailing on the Dawn Treader.
Quotes
*"Your Majesties and gentlemen and ladies all, there's just one thing I want to say. There's not one of us chaps as was pressed on this journey. We're volunteers. And there's some here that are looking very hard at that table and thinking about king's feasts who were talking very loud about adventures on the day we sailed from Cair Paravel, and swearing they wouldn't come home till we'd found the end of the world. And there were some standing on the quay who would have given all they had to come with us. It was thought a finer thing then to have a cabin-boy's berth on the Dawn Treader than to wear a knight's belt. I don't know if you get the hang of what I'm saying. But what I mean is that I think chaps who set out like us will look as silly as—as those Dufflepuds—if we come home and say we got to the beginning of the world's end and hadn't the heart to go further." Rumblebuffin is a giant who once attempted to take on the White Witch in her own courtyard. The Witch, of course, turned him to stone with her wand. He stays there as a statue until Aslan breathes on him. After knocking down the wall of the courtyard at Aslan's request, Rumblebuffin accepts Lucy's offer of her handkerchief to mop his brow (though Lucy has a close call when Rumblebuffin almost mistakes her for the handkerchief). He then joins the other liberated Narnians as they follow Aslan to aid Peter and Edmund on the battlefield.

About Rumblebuffin
Rumblebuffin is well-intentioned but not overbright and has a pleasant personality. He is very polite, as shown by his gracious acceptance and use of Lucy's tiny handkerchief. Although he was turned into a statue for his pains, his challenge to the Witch in her own courtyard demonstrated great courage. Though he is not very educated, he is willing to do whatever Aslan asks, and uses his great size to help the Narnian cause.
Prince Rilian, his mother, and several other Narnians go out for a picnic one spring afternoon. After a time the Queen grows tired and decides to rest a short distance away from the group. Suddenly Rilian hears her cry out and when he rushes to her side he sees a green serpent gliding away in the grass. The Queen has been bitten by that snake and dies from its poison. Rilian, wild with grief, vows to avenge his mother's death and rides out every day looking for the worm to slay it. One day, after his father's friend Drinian has seen the green Lady with Rilian, the Prince rides out once again but does not return to the castle that night. He is not seen again for over ten years until Jill, Eustace, and Puddleglum meet him with the Lady of the Green Kirtle. At this meeting he is wearing a full suit of armor and they do not recognize him. When the three travelers are brought to see the Queen of the Underland, Rilian insists on speaking with them. As they talk, Rilian reveals that the Earthmen are digging to the surface and he is to ride out, slay the ruler of the land above, and proclaim himself king. He will also take the green Lady (whom he refers to as his savior) as his wife and queen. After dinner he tells them that “his hour” is near and the Earthmen will come to bind him to the Silver Chair. Whatever happens, he warns them, they must not set him free. However, while bound to the chair, Rilian in his ravings cries out to them to free him in the name of Aslan. This fulfills the fourth Sign, and at great risk, they release Rilian from the chair and the enchantment is broken. Rilian destroys the chair and they make plans to escape, but are discovered by the Queen of the Underland. Her attempt to re-enchant them is unsuccessful, and in her fury she transforms into the same serpent that killed Rilian's mother. Rilian and the others slay the serpent and return to Narnia. Rilian arrives in time to see his father Caspian just before the old king dies.
About Rilian
Rilian is a brave and honorable knight whose chivalry toward women is his defining attribute, but also his most vulnerable point. Out of devotion to his mother he dedicates himself to avenging her death, and as he attempts this he is lured into dangerous enchantment by the Lady of the Green Kirtle. He is then imprisoned in the Underland for ten years, during which he has only one hour a day in which he knows his true self. The rest of the time he spends as the witless and enchanted “pawn” of the powerful Queen of the Underland, who is using him to gain control of Narnia. Even after the Witch has tried to kill them and they have vanquished her, Rilian says, "Yet I am glad, gentlemen, that the foul Witch took to her serpent form at the last. It would not have suited well either with my heart or with my honor to have slain a woman." Rilian displays true courage as they make their escape from the Underland, and his adventurous spirit is stirred by a glimpse of the land of Bism below Underland. He wishes to travel there, but he follows his duty of returning to his ailing father Caspian.
Quotes
*"If you were not so young a warrior, Boy, you and I must have fought to the death on this quarrel. I can hear no words against my Lady's honour." (SC, Ch. 10)
*"But fie on gravity! Is it not the most comical and ridiculous thing in the world to think of them all going about their business and never dreaming that under their peaceful fields and floors, only a fathom down, there is a great army ready to break out upon them like a fountain!" (SC, Ch. 11)
*"Once and for all, I adjure you to set me free. By all fears and all loves, by the bright skies of Overland, by the great Lion, by Aslan himself, I charge you—" (SC, Ch. 11)
*"We have all been dreaming, these last few minutes. How could we have forgotten it? Of course we've all seen the sun." (SC, Ch. 12)
*"Courage, friends. Whether we live or die Aslan will be our good lord." (SC, Ch. 14)
Rhince meets Edmund, Lucy, and Eustace after they arrive on the Dawn Treader. Rhince is the first mate and spends much of the voyage on the poop deck steering or captaining the ship when Drinian is ashore. Rhince does not get along with Eustace at all. When Eustace disappears on Dragon Island, Rhince expresses his strong dislike of Eustace, and is immediately rebuked by Reepicheep. Once the crew reaches Ramandu's Island, Rhince and Drinian are responsible for choosing which men will sail on to the end of the world and which men will remain behind. Rhince sails on with the rest of the crew and helps to break the spell that holds the lords in an enchanted sleep on Ramandu's Island.

About Rhince
Rhince is a loyal sailor on the Dawn Treader. He is a skilled seaman who knows his work, and as first mate, Rhince is trusted with the ship on many occasions while Drinian goes ashore with Caspian and the others. Rhince appears to come from a lower class than Drinian. Because of his common origins and uneducated speech, Rhince seems to represent the crew among the higher-born company. But he does not take part in the sailors' near-mutiny on Ramandu's Island, and though his manner is not always refined, his loyalty is never questioned.
Reepicheep the Mouse is one of the first Old Narnians that Caspian meets. When he is presented to the young king, Reepicheep immediately places his band of twelve valiant Mice at Caspian's disposal. He fights by Caspian's side as they battle Miraz's army. Reepicheep and the other Mice are aggrieved when they are not chosen to deliver High King Peter's challenge of single combat, since the only trumpeter in the army is a Mouse. Reepicheep asks if he may serve as a marshal of the lists at the duel between Peter and Miraz, but Peter says that it would not do because some humans are afraid of mice. Reepicheep gallantly concedes the point, and goes on to win undying glory in the second Battle of Beruna, during which he is terribly wounded. Lucy uses her cordial to heal his wounds, but it could not grow back his missing tail. The other Mice unsheath their swords, ready to cut off their own tails if their High Mouse could not have his. Because of their "great hearts," and the kindness that Reepicheep's people had shown Him when they ate away at the cords that bound the dead Lion before they were Talking Mice, Aslan grants Reepicheep a new tail.

~ The Voyage of the Dawn Treader ~ (1952)
Reepicheep sails with King Caspian aboard the Dawn Treader as they set out on their quest to find the lost seven lords of Narnia. But the Mouse has an even higher hope for the journey: to sail to the eastern end of the world, and into Aslan's own country. A Dryad had spoken a prophecy over Reepicheep's cradle that the Mouse would find all he sought in the Utter East. When the company lands on the Lone Islands, Reepicheep and the others are captured by slavers and remain imprisoned until Caspian abolishes the slave trade on the Lone Islands the next day. When Eustace is turned into a dragon, Reepicheep does his best to comfort him, even though Eustace had treated Reepicheep rudely at the beginning of the voyage. After they discover the island whose water turns objects to gold (and one of the seven lords who now rests on the bottom as a gold statue), Reepicheep suggests calling it "Deathwater Island." Later when they land on the island of the Duffers, the others are pondering how to avoid the invisible people (Dufflepuds) when Reepicheep argues that it is only honorable to meet them boldly. It is at the Mouse's insistence that Caspian orders the Dawn Treader to enter the mist surrounding the Dark Island. When they are attacked by a sea monster, Reepicheep astounds the company by telling them not to fight. It is uncharacteristic of the Mouse to suggest not fighting, but he sees that the only way to escape the monster is to push its coils off the ship. When they finally reach Ramandu's Island and find the last three Narnian lords in an enchanted sleep, Reepicheep is the first to volunteer to spend the night there and keep guard. When Ramandu tells them that in order to break the enchantment they must sail to the World's End and leave one of their number behind, Reepicheep says, "That is my heart's desire." And so, as they come to the eastern end of the world, Reepicheep throws his sword away and paddles his coracle to Aslan's Country. He is never seen in Narnia again.

About Reepicheep
Reepicheep is one of the most memorable and beloved characters in the Chronicles. Despite his size, he is the most valiant of all the Talking Beasts of Narnia. Lewis writes "his mind was full of forlorn hopes, death-or-glory charges, and last stands." (VDT, Ch. 5) He requests that he and his eleven Mice be put at the front of the battle against Miraz's army. When the Telmarines express fear about entering the doorway back into our world, Reepicheep offers to lead his own Mice through it to set an example. This fearlessness makes Reepicheep an excellent companion aboard the Dawn Treader. On Dragon Island, Caspian has to forbid him from challenging a dragon (who turns out to be Eustace) to single combat. And of course, while all the others want to avoid the Dark Island, Reepicheep urges them to go forward into the blackness (and there they find the Lord Rhoop). He does not lose heart even when it seems they will never escape the Dark Island. When Caspian despairingly tells Reepicheep, "There are some things no man can face," the Mouse replies, "It is, then, my good fortune not to be a man." Despite his fierce nature, Reepicheep is also a very courteous and polite mouse, and a loyal follower of Aslan. Reepicheep's hunger for daring deeds leads him to the greatest adventure of all and his heart's desire: Aslan's Country. Just before saying his goodbyes, he throws his sword into the ocean, saying, "I shall need it no more."

Inspiration
As a child, C. S. Lewis wrote stories about Animal-Land. In these stories, the hero was a brave mouse named Peter who would ride out in armor to slay cats. The notion of a small creature displaying great courage while facing larger opponents is central to the character of Reepicheep.

Quotes
*"Sire, my life is ever at your command, but my honour is my own." (PC, Ch. 13)
*"I thought I heard someone laughing just now. If anyone present wishes to make me the subject of his wit, I am very much at his service—with my sword—whenever he has leisure." (PC, Ch. 13)
*"Sir, I can eat and sleep and die for my King without one. But a tail is the honour and glory of a Mouse." (PC, Ch. 15)
*"When I was in my cradle, a wood woman, a Dryad, spoke this verse over me: 'Where sky and water meet, Where the waves grow sweet, Doubt not, Reepicheep, To find all you seek, There is the utter East.' I do not know what it means. But the spell of it has been on me all my life." (VDT, Ch. 2)
*"Do I understand that you do not intend to give me satisfaction? Then take that—and that—to teach you manners—and the respect due to a knight—and a Mouse—and a Mouse's tail—" (VDT, Ch. 2)
*"Because, this is a very great adventure, and no danger seems to me so great as that of knowing when I get back to Narnia that I left a mystery behind me through fear." (VDT, Ch. 13)
*"While I can, I sail east in the Dawn Treader. When she fails me, I paddle east in my coracle. When she sinks, I shall swim east with my four paws. And when I can swim no longer, if I have not reached Aslan's country, or shot over the edge of the world in some vast cataract, I shall sink with my nose to the sunrise and Peepiceek will be head of the talking mice in Narnia." (VDT, Ch. 14)
*"Welcome, in the Lion's name. Come further up and further in." (LB, Ch. 16)
"One of the things I thought was, 'well the world of Narnia is quite British and [Reepicheep] should be like a noble Britishman.' He's a knight, he's a knight of Narnia and he's very proud of that fact. When we started going through names of who could pull this off, there's a very limited number of actors out there who can bring that ability and somewhat of a poshness to the character without it going to cliched. And one of the people that came up that I was really interested in speaking to was Eddie Izzard." — Director Andrew Adamson
